Port of Açu and IKM Testing, part of the Norwegian IKM Group, signed an agreement this Wednesday, October 29, during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Brazil, to create a consortium focused on providing decommissioning-related services.

The goal is to offer cleaning and decontamination services for platforms and other offshore units at the port-industrial complex located in São João da Barra, in northern Rio de Janeiro state.

The consortium builds on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two companies in May of this year.

“We seek strategic partnerships to complement the activities we already offer at Açu, such as the temporary mooring of platforms. We are preparing to host Brazil’s first sustainable decommissioning hub,” explains Vinicius Patel, Port Administration Director at Port of Açu.

“IKM Testing plays a key role in the development of the decommissioning hub, bringing extensive technical expertise in decontamination and NORM neutralization projects, with over 35 operations carried out in the North Sea and in Brazil. We are incorporating our safety values and best ESG practices into the project, reinforcing our commitment to making this initiative both sustainable and efficient. Together with Port of Açu and the entire supply chain, we are joining forces to strengthen the circular economy in Brazil’s oil and gas sector,” highlights Alexandre Villanova, Director of IKM Testing Brazil.

In addition to mooring services, the port plans to offer support services for the pre-dismantling and dismantling of platforms. Currently, Port of Açu has a quay capable of simultaneously servicing more than three offshore units/vessels engaged in pre-decommissioning activities, with potential expansion to up to ten units.

Key advantages of the project include proximity to the Campos Basin, environmental licensing and capacity for biofouling removal (such as sun coral), the presence of a unified control center for risk and emergency management, and integration with Brazil’s existing scrap logistics network.
